Pine tree blown down by the recent high winds, the wet soils and recent tree clearance have caused this large tree to fall. But it will soon be transformed into warming logs and chipped paths, and the good news is only minor damage was done to the young Cornus plants either side of where the trunk fell!

Small bulbous iris were the stars of the RHS Spring Show. Many of these cultivars are great in the garden blended as incidents with primroses, snowdrops and aconites. I have them flowering under a young Magnolia stellata. The images show cultivars of Iris reticulata, Iris danfordiae and others.

A small evergreen shrub native to British woodlands and hedgerows Daphne laureola, known as copse or spurge laurel. This was part of a small winter garden at Myddleton House. Very shade tolerant and flowers in late winter or as I like to think early spring! Pollinated by flies and moths.

Amongst the double snowdrops at Marks Hall a few clumps of single Galanthus dance in the wind. This form has a long pedicel (flower stalk) meaning the flower hangs very freely.

A blizzard of double flowered snowdrops, Galanthus nivalis ‘Flore Plena’, at Mark Hall Arboretum - magical! These have slowly spread across this woodland by increasing the number of bulbs. You can achieve the same idea by planting under deciduous shrubs.

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Harvington Yellow’ best placed in the shelter of a deciduous shrub to protect flowers from sharp frosts. Just managed to photograph this one in my front garden between the blustery winds!

A fiery combination to warm up winter Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’ and in the background probably Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’. The scent from the witch hazel flowers was amazing.
Hopefully will have photo of blizzards of snowdrop flowers for you soon.

The fruits of Platanus x hispanica, London plane hang on the branches like Christmas decorations. In the summer these break apart full of itchy hairs and are quite problematic as they irritate peoples eyes and cause a fire hazard.
But they really help with tree identification from a distance.

A look up at this time of year reveals the tracery of many deciduous trees. Here in a London courtyard garden this Koelreuteria paniculata, golden rain tree, produces a wavy crown of branches and you can just see some of the seed pods which aid identification.

What a sight in February in a local garden Galanthus with a huge drift of Cyclamen coum which have seeded over the border creating this spectacular display.
'An island in gravel' created by a worn cherry tree root probably caused by lawn mower blades when the root used to be surrounded by turf.
